RULES FOR FIGURE SKATING COMPETITIONS

Figure skating just like any other sports and competition is governed by certain rules and regulations. It is important to be aware of these rules so that problems will be avoided especially for the technicalities that arise during competitions. It is during the practice or rehearsal when it is best for the coach to inform the figure skaters about the rules in figure skating.

In the competition proper, figure skaters who encounter any problem must approach the referee immediately because he is directly in charge. While performing a compulsory moves routine it is best for the athlete to wait for the referee’s signal before he begins. Free skating programs are generally skated to music.  Figure skating music is timed precisely to the required length for the competition level.

Specific rules regarding the athletes apply also. It must be clear that an athlete must not be a registered coach at the competition and the candidate for a competition must be of the same age and ability as his partner.

Figure skating has many levels or programs and categories that follow rules. The general rules are listed below but there are still specific rules to be followed. Under the singles competition, there are the Levels 1-6 each having the Compulsory Element Group and Freestyle Programs. In the pair skating, there are Levels 1 and 2 each having the Compulsory Element Group and the Freestyle program. The participating skaters must be a Level II singles skater and has passed the badges 1-10. They are allowed to perform any routine from the singles category of badges 1-10. In the Ice Dance level which has Level 1-4 of Compulsory Element Group, those participants in Level 1 must be passers of Badge 10 or Level 2 but not exceeding Level 3 singles. All the competitions under this category may be in solo or dance teams (one male and one female or two females or two males). There also is a Guest Skater Level 1-4 wherein a male or female guest skater with a national or world category will dance with the athlete.

All procedures are under the rules of the competition and there can be changes with each competition. If there are rules violated, they can be protested. But be sure they are reasonable. The coach’s duty is to do a protest if there are valid violations.

The athletes and the coach must always be aware of the rules and violations so that there will be no problems during figure skating competitions.
